HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INDICATOR CODE (HMIC)

A one (1) character alphabetic code used to identify all known or suspected hazardous items as defined by safety, health, transportation and/or environmental regulations to serve as a flag that a procuring activity must acquire a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) when a hazardous item is procured, and to inform Federal Catalog System users when more detailed information on an item is available in the Hazardous Material Information System.

HMICDescription
DThere is no information in the HMIRS; however, the NSN is in an FSC in Table I of Federal Standard 313 and an MSDS should be available to the user.
NThere is no data in the HMIRS and the NSN is in an FSC not generally suspected of containing hazardous materials.
PThere is no information in the HMIRS; however, the NSN is in an FSC in Table II of Federal Standard 313 and an MSDS may be required by the user. The requirement for an MSDS is dependent on a hazard determination of the supplier or the intended end use of the product.
